What to Do with Our Selves: Transcend or Build? A conversation with Sasha Chapin and Gena Gorlin

A recording from Dr. Gena Gorlin's live video

Thank you

, , , , , and many others for tuning into my live video with !

In this follow-up to our first Substack Live conversation, further inspired by this Notes thread regarding the therapies (IFS, meditation, etc) favored by Silicon Valley, we did our best to surface and explore the substantive differences in how we think about:

  • the role of the judging, evaluative self in mental health

  • the methods and aims of therapy / coaching / meditation

  • the relationship between our conscious and subconscious selves (more like “rider” and “elephant”, or more like “sculptor” and “clay”?)

  • the extent to which we can change our personalities (and when it is worth doing so)

  • the nature and origins of spiritual experience

  • ….and more!

Listen above if you missed it, and tell me which topics you’d like me to expand into long-form posts (as I feel like there are at least a few waiting to be written).
